The Origins of Agriculture with Prof Bruce Pascoe and Assoc Prof Alison Crowther

This event was a prelude to the HarlanIV symposium which was held in Brisbane, Australia for the first time in 2022 in conjunction with the TropAg conference. The Harlan symposia are dedicated to the origins of agriculture and the domestication, evolution, and utilization of genetic resources. Ongoing research is revealing the complexity of food production systems and their development both in Australia and globally.

Alison Crowther is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow in the School of Social Science, The University of Queensland. Her research interests include the archaeology of early agriculture in East Africa, trans-regional maritime trade and crop transfers, and ancient food processing technologies. She is currently directing a major research project on early long-distance contacts between Southeast Asia and East Africa, and how these connections transformed peoples, societies and environments in the western Indian Ocean.

Bruce Pascoe is a writer and farmer. He has published 36 book including Dark Emu which won the NSW Premier's Award for Literature in 2016 and Young Dark Emu which won the both the Booksellers Association Prize and the CBCA Non-fiction award in 2020

The conference dinner featured a three-course meal showcasing Queensland’s finest and freshest produce along with a live band.
